ROBOT FROM A SUPERMARKET GETS A TASTE OF FREEDOM

Robot motion

In 2019, Giant Food Shops made the largest robotic deployment in retail history when it announced it would equip each of its 172 US stores with a robot. The "Marty" robot, which stands six feet (1.8 meters) tall, was created to autonomously scour the store for spills and other possible hazards. Giant decided to give these rolling monoliths silly eyes to make them a little less intimidating in their stores.

One of these robots may have been lured by those wide eyes, or by the momentary glances of the outside world via the store's sliding doors, to escape its retail misery and make a wild run across the parking lot. At least, as frantic a dash as such a thing is capable of. It's difficult to determine whether Giant should be commended or censured for preventing a robot uprising for as long as it did because this technology is still in its infancy; nevertheless, we'll have more information in the years to come.

The tall robot can be seen in a Facebook video navigating effortlessly between rows of automobiles outside the Giant in Hellertown, Pennsylvania. Marty was prevented from leaving the premises by store employees, and at the end of the film, you can see them shoving the defeated automaton back inside.

A Giant representative reportedly told the local ABC news outlet that Marty was "taking a fresh air break," but he didn't elaborate on how this egregiously noticeable machine could have have managed to roll out the front door without anybody seeing. We'd bet that Marty had a human helper for this heist, possibly someone who wanted to stir trouble to protest the usage of robots in the workplace.

It's important to note that Walmart chose against developing its own Marty-style robot in 2020, in part because they discovered that customers disliked the machines moving around while they were shopping. We'd like to imagine that the robots' more risky escape attempts were the real reason.
